That's another reason why the Rhine is so beautiful. Despite the winter, the proverbial fifth season is the most colorful season on the Rhine. The jesters are out and about, populating the halls and alleyways of the city and local communities between Weiberfastnacht and Ash Wednesday. Programs for carnival sessions are devised long in advance with a great deal of local commitment, costumes are devised and jokes are rehearsed that never fail to make an impact.

Bad Salzig joins in with its own parade on the Saturday before Rose Monday and Oppenhausen shows how exuberantly the Rhinelanders know how to celebrate with its own parade on the highest carnival holiday. Music, jokes and fun all along the (Rhine) line.
