Freiburg, the city in the border triangle of Germany, Switzerland and France. Enjoy Freiburg in the Mediterranean south of Germany at the foot of the Black Forest. Freiburg originated from an old settlement and was granted city rights as early as 1120. In 1200, construction began on Freiburg Cathedral, now one of the city's most important sights. Discover Freiburg's picturesque streets and squares, visit the Bächle and Gässle with their colourful Rhine pebble mosaics and the Münsterplatz with the cathedral, the town hall and its historic houses. The city not only delights with its charming old town and unique shopping districts, but also with its diverse gastronomy. Freiburg invites you to visit its various Christmas markets in the run-up to Christmas. The festive Christmas lights, the scent of gingerbread, chestnuts and fir trees waft through the historic alleys and courtyards, and the Christmas decorations in the old town streets give the city in Breisgau a wonderful atmosphere. The journey begins at around 7:00 a.m. at Cologne Central Station, with further pick-ups in Bonn. True to the motto ‘travel culture on rails’, we start our day with a hearty RHEINGOLD breakfast at all seats with tables. Afterwards, we get you in the mood for this beautiful journey with a glass of sparkling wine. In Freiburg, we offer you an optional 1 1/2-hour guided city tour.
Our special train will depart from Freiburg at around 5 p.m. for the return journey. You will travel back to Bonn and Cologne via the main line. Dinner at your table on the train will round off the day and the journey. At around 10.30 p.m., the train will arrive back at Cologne Central Station, our final stop. Our special train consists of Rheingold carriages from different eras – mainly carriages from the 1960s, including the legendary observation carriage. In addition, there is our RHEINGOLD compartment carriage from 1928, in which our passengers can enjoy the beautiful journey without catering. The train is pulled by the traditional RHEINGOLD E 10.12, which also has a blue and ivory paint finish to match our train.
